The share of solar photovoltaic energy in the gross electricity consumption in France kept increasing over the last years. In the second quarter of 2021, it reached six percent of the total electricity consumption of France, the highest value since at least 2017. The quarterly variations in the solar energy usage are due to the seasonal variability of insolation in France, typically higher in the third quarter of the year.
The total gross electricity consumption in France was around 470 terawatt hours in 2021.
