Damages paid as a result of ECtHR judgments in Romania 2008-2022
Since 2015 Romania has drastically increased not only the number of convictions at the European Court of Human Rights on prison conditions, but also the amount of compensation that the Romanian government had to pay as a result of these convictions. Romania had to pay compensation as a result of ECtHR judgments, which amounted to a record high 3.23 million euros in 2018. The amount payed in 2022 was 2.89 million euros, the overall payments up to December 2022 was 14.26 million euros.
