In 2019, roughly 52,500 beds were spread across the 103 general hospitals in Belgium. The general hospitals in Belgium had notably 35,000 acute beds, 13,600 chronic beds, and fewer psychiatric beds in 2019. Acute beds are intended for short stays, whereas chronic beds are meant for longer stays or for patients who need chronic treatment. On the other hand, psychiatric beds are used for patients with psychological suffering.
