The Men's 4x400 meter Relay has been included in all Olympic Summer Games since it was first introduced in 1912. Since 1912, men's teams from the United States have had the most success in the event, winning 18 golds and 3 silver medals from 25 events. Three runners from the United States have won this event on two occasions each, these were Steve Lewis (1988 and 1992), Jeremy Wariner (2004 and 2008) and LaShawn Merritt (2012 and 2016). Bahamian runner Chris Brown has won four medals in this event between 2000 and 2016.
Stripped medals
In 2004, it was ruled that one of the U.S. runners in 2000, Jerome Young, (who had run in the qualifying heats only) had been found guilty of doping; the U.S. team was then stripped of their gold medal, before the decision was overturned in 2005. In 2008, however, Antonio Pettigrew (who did run in the final) was also found to have used performance enhancing drugs, and in 2012, the U.S. team of 2002 were then re-stripped of their gold medals and all medals were redistributed accordingly. The bronze-winning Russian team of 2008 are the only others to have been stripped of a medal won in this event, when retests in 2016 showed that one of the team members had used banned substances.

This data was collected using the official Olympic.org site, as well as a spreadsheet from the Guardian that includes data from 1896-2008 (available here), 2012 and 2016 data was compared with that from Encyclopaedia Britannica, and several news outlets were used to update the table when medals were reassigned (i.e. for doping offenses).
