Population share with access to wastewater treatment in Japan FY 2018, by prefecture

In the fiscal year 2018, close to 100 percent of the population in Tokyo Prefecture in Japan had access to wastewater treatment. By comparison, only around 62 percent of the citizens in Tokushima Prefecture had access to wastewater treatment.

Wastewater treatment

In 2018, the wastewater treatment accessibility share of the Japanese population increased to 91.4 percent from 90.9 percent in 2017. It implies that approximately 11 million people had no access to wastewater treatment in 2018. In the municipalities with less than 50 thousand inhabitants, only 80.3 percent of the population received wastewater treatment. In terms of types of treatment, the vast majority of citizens in Japan were served with sewage lines, around nine percent were with septic tanks, close to three percent were with agricultural drainage facilities, and approximately 0.2 percent were with community wastewater treatment plants.

Sewage lines

More than 79 percent of the population in Japan had access to sewage work systems in 2018. The prefecture with the lowest accessibility rate of sewage treatment was Wakayama Prefecture at around 28 percent. Following the increasing number of water pollution alongside with the rapid industrialization, the Japanese government enacted the Water Pollution Prevention Act in 1970. Sewage lines available in the country are regulated under this act.
