Average monthly water and sewer bills in the United States 2001-2018

Between 2001 and 2018, the average combined water and sewer bill* in the United States increased more than 150 percent to 100 U.S. dollars a month. The noticeable increase in water bills over the past decade have affected many people across the nation. In 2018, the share of city populations living in areas with unaffordable water bills was considerably high, especially in New Orleans and Cleveland. In the case of the latter, approximately 44 percent of the total population lived in neighborhoods with unaffordable water bills.
