Number of health care units in Romania 2020, by type

In 2020, the number of hospitals in Romania increased to 535, out of which approximately one-third were private hospitals. At the same time, there were over two thousand medical offices in schools and universities, and more than 10 thousand family doctors’ offices in the country.

Hospital capacity

The number of hospital beds in Romania maintained relatively constant values over the last years, totaling just over 144 thousand in 2020. The country’s hospital capacity has proven to be a serious problem, especially in times of great need such as the Collective fire in 2015, or the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in 2020. In 2019, there were slightly over five thousand beds at intensive care units in the country. Out of these, a minimum of one thousand were constantly occupied by patients infected with COVID-19 from November 2020 to May 2021.

Budget and investment projects

By 2019, the budget for county hospitals - such as Timis, Constanta, Arad, Arges and Maramures - nearly doubled compared to the funds allocated to them in 2015. Despite the increase, there is still a need for modern medical equipment, as well as new medical facilities. For that reason, a total investment value worth over three billion euros for the construction of seven new regional hospitals was announced in Romania in 2021.
