Health care in Czechia - statistics & facts

Czechia offers its citizens universal health care based on the compulsory insurance model. However, the health care system is under increasing strain due to the country's aging population. Since the beginning of the new millennium, the share of Czechs aged 65+ has increased by several percentage points. The older population requires more medical attention and higher spending since the state covers their health insurance. Additionally, the medical field was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, which challenged the limits of medical professions and further increased the costs of the whole health care system.

Health care professionals

Despite a staff shortage in some medical fields, the country-wide number of health care professionals increased. However, this has gone slowly for some professions. For example, the number of nurses and midwives has remained almost the same in the past years. The number of inhabitants per one physician has decreased thanks to the rise in personnel. Out of all regions, the capital city of Prague is home to the highest number of medical staff, such as physicians. Most medical professions come with a certain prestige and relatively high salaries. The average salary of a person working in health care has increased by around 50 percent since 2017.

Psychiatry and mental health

The number of people seeking mental health professionals increased in Czechia. More patients have been treated in outpatient psychiatric departments every year except for 2020, most likely due to the COVID-19-related lockdowns. In 2021, neurotic, stress, and somatoform disorders were the most common conditions diagnosed in psychiatric departments. Women constituted the majority of patients. This conforms to certain gender stereotypes, as it was proven that men are less willing to seek out professional help when feeling mentally unwell.

Diseases and state of health

Czechia's state of health has recently recorded positive and negative developmental results. For instance, the number of diagnosed cancer cases has been stagnating for multiple years. Furthermore, the spread of serious illnesses, such as tuberculosis, has been on a downward trend for decades. In contrast to that, specific habits negatively impact the general state of health. Most men were overweight or obese based on their BMI in 2022. Over half of Czechs were not doing any sports or physical activity or only doing so less than once a week. The fluctuating prevalence of harmful alcohol use in the country negatively impacts general health even further.
