African slave arrivals by region and century 1501-1866
Throughout the transatlantic slave trade, Brazil was the most common disembarking region for captured slaves, with almost five million arrivals in the region between the 16th and mid-19th centuries. Brazil was also the most common destination in each individual century, except in the 1500s, where more slaves were brought to the Spanish colonies (although they were usually transported by Portuguese merchants). After Brazil, the Caribbean region was the most common destination for African slaves, particularly to British and French colonies in the 18th century.
