
Per metric ton kilometer cost of different modes of logistics in India 2021
In 2021, the most expensive mode of logistics in India was air with around 18 Indian rupees per metric ton kilometer, more than tenfold the cost of rail transport. It was followed by road transport with 3.6 rupees per metric kilometer. Road shared around 64 percent of the overall freight logistics. For freight transporting beyond 300 km, railway's modal share decreased to around 32 percent. The substantial logistics cost took around 14 percent of the national GDP.
