
Amount sought by U.S. hospitals through court actions against patients 2018-2020
From January 1, 2018 to July 31, 2020, VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, filed around 17,806 lawsuits or other court actions against patients who had unpaid medical bills, seeking a total amount of around 17 million U.S. dollars. Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York took 491 court actions against patients, but sought around 24 million U.S. dollars in unpaid medical bills. During this time period, just 10 of the largest 100 hospitals in the United States by revenue accounted for 97 percent of court actions against patients. Some hospitals, including VCU Medical Center, stopped suing patients in 2020 due to policy changes, but it is still unclear if this will last.
