The most popular reasons for having an environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) policy among sovereign funds in 2021 were improving returns and reducing risk. The most common original motivation, however, were fiduciary reasons, according to 54 percent of respondents, but this motivation dropped down to 41 percent when being considered as current reason.
