NFT trading game Splinterlands, formerly Seem Monsters, saw an increase in sales volume in September 2021, as it became one of the most popular blockchain games available. Like another popular NFT game called Axie Infinity, Splinterlands is "play-to-earn": players earn cryptocurrency by playing. The game consists of collecting and trading cards so as to fight monsters for in-game rewards. In a way, Splinterlands continues the overall trend that gaming is a popular category for NFTs. What makes this application different from others is its adaptability: The video game does not run on the Ethereum blockchain, unlike many other applications, but runs on Hive. However, the game is both cross-compatible with other blockchains and has its own blockchain for in-game support or updates to the game.
