Operating length of the railway network in Japan 2016-2022
As of March 2022, the total operating length of the passenger railway network in Japan amounted to around 27.52 thousand kilometers, decreasing from 27.95 thousand kilometers in 2016. The closures of smaller local railway lines were primarily the reason for this decrease, as large-sized private passenger railways, for example, even grew a few kilometers.
