Transportation sector CO₂ emissions in Canada 1970-2021
In 2021, transportation in Canada released more than 165 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) into the atmosphere. This was an increase of nearly three percent in comparison to 2020 levels, when the sector's emissions dropped due to the outbreak of COVID-19, which had a major impact on mobility. Annual transportation emissions in Canada have experienced considerable growth in recent decades, having increased by more than 30 percent between 1990 and 2021. Road transportation is by far the largest source of Canada's transportation emissions.
