UK: shipping emissions 1990-2020

Between 1990 and 2020, domestic shipping emissions in the United Kingdom fell over 37 percent, while international shipping emissions fell over 24 percent. In 2020, the domestic shipping emissions was around 5.3 MtCO2e, while the international shipping emissions was around 6.1 MtCO2e. Since 2008, annual international shipping emissions have been higher than domestic emissions.

Plans to further reduce UK maritime emissions will involve phasing out the sale of new non-zero emission domestic shipping vessels, as well as encouraging the uptake of renewable hydrogen.
