Hydraulic fracturing for hydrocarbon generation leads to great volumes of water being produced. The water production by onshore drilling in the United States in 2021 amounted to 21.2 billion barrels. This figure represents a decrease of eight percent in comparison to the decade-peak recorded in 2019, at some 22.9 billion barrels. The volume of water produced by hydraulic fracturing is expected to continue growing, reaching a forecast value of 23.8 billion barrels in 2026.
