In 2020, the passenger capacity of Germany's public land transport network amounted to 228.3 billion available seat kilometers (ASK), excluding regional trains. This was a slight year-on-year decrease of around 1.1 percent. In the same year, the urban bus passenger capacity was the largest, representing almost 59 percent of the total ASKs of the German collective urban land transport.
The available seat miles (ASM) or kilometers (ASK) captures the passenger-carrying capacity of a vehicle. It is calculated by multiplying the number of seats available times the number of miles or kilometers traveled.
