Catholics and Mass attendees in Germany 2022

In 2022, there were just under 21 million people in Germany who identified as Catholics, while 1.2 million people went to Mass. The number of Catholics and how many attend Mass has been steadily decreasing since 1950. A noticeable decrease was recorded during the first two years of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The information about the number of Catholics from 1964 is the result of a rewrite and update by the DBK based on the census from May 27, 1970. For 1987, the update was based on the census from May 25, 1987. The figures from 1990 refer to information from parishes and dioceses.

From 1990 the new federal states are included.

Figures were rounded for better understanding of the statistic. Older figures were taken from respective earlier reports.
