Breakdown of GHG emissions from agriculture in Brazil 2021, by segment
Enteric fermentation was by far the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil's agriculture sector in 2021, accounting for almost 70 percent of total emissions (excluding energy-related emissions). Enteric fermentation is a part of the digestive process in ruminant animals and produces large amounts of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Some of the biggest carbon-polluting meat and dairy companies are based in Brazil, such as JBS and Marfrig.
