Agriculture nitrous oxide emissions worldwide 1990-2019
Global emissions of nitrous oxides (N₂O) from agricultural processes were 2.3 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (Gt CO₂e) in 2019. Annual N₂O emissions related to agriculture have increased more than 25 percent since 1990. Synthetic fertilizers are one of the major sources of agricultural N₂O emissions. N₂O is a potent greenhouse gas that is 300 times more powerful at warming the planet than CO₂.
