Methane emissions in the United States 1990-2022, by sector
U.S. energy sector methane (CH₄) emissions were equivalent to 282 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂e) in 2022. This accounted for nearly 40 percent of total methane emissions in the U.S. that year. Despite this, energy sector methane emissions have decreased by more than 30 percent since 1990. By comparison, methane emissions from agricultural activities have increased by roughly 15 percent.
