The energy sector is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in India, having generated some 1.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) in 2022. By the year 2050, this figure is forecast to more than double and reach 3.3 GtCO₂e. In fact, according to World Data Lab, emissions across most sectors are projected to grow in the upcoming decades if no advancement in reducing emissions intensities is made.

Figures refer to emissions under a business as usual scenario without drastic deviations in technology advancement or policy-making from past experiences. While there is typically still some technological progress in the form of reducing emissions intensities (stemming e.g. from energy efficiency gains) that are partly a result of policy actions, this scenario does not take into account announced policy pledges.
