Breakdown of women same-sex couples in France 2020, by union type and age
According to the Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (INSEE), these differences can be partially explained by the fact that LGBTQ couples are younger and newer, and therefore less likely to have ever had a marriage. They also have a lower preference for marriage at the same age than heterosexual couples. For example, while 42 percent of women couples aged 45-49 were married in 2020, this proportion rose to 74 percent for women of the same age in relationships with men.
