Around 40 percent of households in Japan bought a pre-owned single-family home without an inspection in the fiscal year 2021, a survey conducted between September and November 2022 found. Another 38 percent of respondents were not aware whether an inspection had been performed on their second-hand house.

*The number of responses includes 591 respondents in the three metropolitan areas Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya who received and returned questionnaires in person and 425 responses via postal questionnaire in all other regions. As the source does not report the exact number of those who have bought detached houses, the number of respondents refers to those who have bought a pre-owned home, including apartments.
