Change in the energy use of GRESB buildings worldwide 2020-2022, by region
Oceania was the only region worldwide where the energy consumption of buildings participating in the GRESB decreased in 2022. During the coronavirus pandemic, many businesses closed temporarily or reduced operations, contributing to a decline in the energy use. As the economy reopened, energy use picked up, with European real estate companies reporting an uptick in consumption of nearly 3.1 percent between 2021 and 2022. Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) is an industry-led organization that collects, validates, scores, and benchmarks ESG performance. ESG benchmarking has been a growing trend among real estate companies worldwide, with the number of companies participating in GRESB benchmark increasing year-on-year since 2013.
