Supplementary notes

The term "young people" refers to individuals in varying age gaps for each country as follows: France (18-24 years), Belgium (18-29 years), Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Sweden, and Norway (18-29 years), United Kingdom (16-29 years), Austria (18-24 years), Spain (18-35 years), and Italy (16-24 years).

Prevalence estimates during the pandemic are pooled averages from national surveys up to 12 August 2021. Limited cross-country comparability arises due to variations in survey numbers and timings. Depression symptoms are assessed through PHQ-8 or PHQ-9, except in France, Estonia, and Italy.
