In 2023, currency in circulation in South Africa reached around 17.2 billion South African rand (ZAR), roughly 948.4 million U.S. dollars. Since 2019, the combined number of coins and banknotes put in circulation by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) have gradually increased on an annual basis.
The South African Reserve Bank is the only producer of coins and banknotes in the country.
