The DVD industry in the U.S. - additional information
Despite the top three DVDs in 2016 generating a combined revenue of over 80 million U.S. dollars, the DVD industry is still under threat from new technologies. On-demand streaming services are able to attract customers with the simplicity of services, a large variety of movies to choose from and cost efficiency. As a result, companies such as Netflix have made high profits and are even replacing regular TV services and DVD purchases. As of 2017, the number of Netflix streaming subscribers in the United States surpassed 50 million. This figure has steadily increased on an annual basis since 2011. Reasoning behind the increase in subscribers may be due to the variety and availability in which Netflix offers its services. Regular television aside, viewers can now log in and watch their favorite movies on smartphones, PCs, and gaming consoles.
