Holiday Inn Hotels - additional information
The Holiday Inn brand started out as a motel chain in the United States when the first Holiday Inn was opened in Memphis in 1952. In 1988, Holiday Inn, or Holiday Corporation as it was then known, was acquired by UK-based company Bass PLC. Ten years later, Bass also purchased the InterContinental brand and, in 2003, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) was formed, encompassing Holiday Inn as one of its brands. In 2017, Holiday Inn’s gross revenue reached 6.3 billion U.S. dollars. While increasing year-on-year since 2009, the figure has still not recovered to pre-recession levels.
Other brands in the InterContinental Hotels Group include Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, Candlewood Suites, Staybridge Suites, InterContinental and Hotel Indigo. Of these, Holiday Inn Express had the largest number of hotels worldwide in 2019 with nearly 2,900. Regent had the smallest number of properties with just six. Revenues attributable to IHG amounted to 2.08 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. Gross revenue, on the other hand, reached 27.9 billion U.S. dollars. The majority of IHG revenue was generated in the U.S.
The revenue of the U.S. hotel industry was approximately 218 billion U.S. dollars in 2018. In 2019, the industry’s occupancy rate was 66.1 percent and the average daily rate was around 131.21 dollars.
