Boeing - worldwide revenue 2007-2019

In 2019, Boeing generated about 76.6 billion U.S. dollars in revenue. This compares to more than 101 billion U.S. dollars in 2018. Boeing is now ranked as the second-largest aerospace company in the world behind Airbus.

The Boeing Company

The Boeing company is a U.S. based aircraft, rotorcraft and much other aerospace equipment manufacturing multinational corporation. The company was founded in 1916 and today’s Boeing is the result of the merger of Boeing with McDonnell Douglas. In 2019, Boeing delivered 158 type 787 aircraft. In total, the aircraft manufacturer delivered around 380 aircraft in 2019. Except for 2019, the aircraft deliveries of Boeing was increasing since 2003 continuously. As of December 31, 2019, Korean Air ordered 20 Boeing aircraft. The sharp decline in Boeing's market position in 2019 is attributed to two fatal crashes Boeing’s new designed 737 MAX. Investigations revealed that these plane crashes occurred due to the malfunctioning of new automated flight control of the 737 MAX. Following the two plane crashes in less than six months, the number of orders for Boeing's 737 model family fell from 837 units in 2018 to 69 units in 2019, resulting in a net loss of 636 million U.S. dollars.

Aircraft manufacturing market

Aircraft manufacturing is a high capital-intensive process. Because of this, there are two dominating firms, Boeing and Airbus. Together the two companies make up over 90 percent of the commercial aircraft market. There are other relatively small aircraft producers in the market, such as Pilatus Aircraft, which only delivered 134 aircraft in 2019. Except for 2019, the competition between Airbus and Boeing aircraft in the aviation industry was quite fierce. Through various innovations, each company tries to outperform the others in the number of gross orders and market share. To sustain its competitive position in the aircraft manufacturing industry, Boeing heavily invested in research and development. Therefore, the company is granted roughly two times more patents in 2018 compared to 2010.
