About This Statistic
This statistic shows the coal consumption of the European Union from 1998 to 2016. In 1998, the European Union’s coal consumption came to around 331.4 million metric tons of oil equivalent. According to the source, the data only include solid fuels, i.e. bituminous coal and anthracite (hard coal), and lignite and brown (sub-bituminous) coal. It excludes coal converted to liquid or gaseous fuels, but includes coal consumed in transformation processes.
