The global health club industry revenue reached 84.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, a significant increase compared to the previous year and the highest figure to-date. Of this total, 35 billion U.S. dollars was generated in Europe and a further 26.8 billion U.S. dollars in North America. Africa and the Middle East have the smallest share of market – 2.18 billion U.S. dollars of the health club industry revenue was generated in this region.
The United States is one of the largest markets for the fitness center industry, with more than 34 thousand fitness centers operating in the country as of 2014. Brazil, the main market in Latin America, is home to the second largest amount of health clubs in the world with over 30,000 centers. In Europe, Germany has the highest number of fitness clubs, followed by Italy and the United Kingdom. The UK is the most lucrative European market though, with over 6.7 billion U.S. dollars in revenue.
As of 2014, Life Time Fitness is the biggest health club company worldwide based on its revenue of nearly 1.3 billion U.S. dollars. Its closest competitor, Virgin Active, generated just over one billion U.S. dollars in revenues over the same time period.
