From 2002 to 2021, the number of state-based conflicts in the world, meaning that at least one of the parties was a state actor, overall increased. It was at its highest in 2015 with 66 state-based conflicts. In 2021, there were 56 state-based conflicts ongoing in the world, of which 26 were in Africa.
