HP Inc's (Hewlett Packard's) market share of PC unit shipments worldwide from 2011 to 2019, by quarter
HP Inc's market share of global PC unit shipments 2011-2019, by quarter
In the third quarter of 2019, Hewlett Packard's market share of global PC shipments stood at 22.4 percent, making HP the second largest PC vendor overall behind only Lenovo. HP’s PC market share has mostly increased since 2012, reflecting an overall trend of consolidation within the PC market. The combined share of global PC shipments of the three major vendors in the market (Lenovo, HP, and Dell) has risen from around 40 percent in 2011 to more than 60 percent in 2019.

Focusing on gaming PCs

In addition to consolidating, the total unit sales of personal computers have declined over the past decade as well. HP has responded to this by building up its product offerings for gamers, as this lucrative section of consumers upgrade their units fairly frequently and spend significant sums of money on their computers. Gaming is a strongly growing segment in the PC industry, with revenue from gaming laptops steadily increasing and annual unit sales of gaming notebooks forecast to surpass 30 million in 2023 up from around 20 million in 2019. Accordingly, HP released their game-centric Omen brand of laptops and desktops targeted at mid-range customers. HP also designed some of the Omen machines to run virtual reality (VR) systems such as the Oculus Rift.
