Leading passenger car models sold in Switzerland 2020

The Skoda Octavia was the car model with the highest number of sales in Switzerland in 2020, with nearly 6,000 units sold. Ranked second was the Tesla Model 3, with 5,051 units sold.

The market dips to a 40 year low

Echoing similar trends in passenger car registrations in European markets, Swiss car sales crashed to their lowest level in four decades. The coronavirus pandemic put a strain on the Swiss auto market which was only rivaled by the slump amid the oil crisis in the 70ies. Swiss car shoppers only bought 237,000 new cars in 2020.

Electric cars defy the pandemic

Sales of passenger cars that are powered by alternative fuels reached about 67,000 units in 2020. That year, the market share of all-electric vehicles exceeded 10 percent, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles accounted for around 8.7 percent of the Swiss market in 2020. The market share of hybrid and mild hybrid electric vehicles topped 20 percent in 2020. The number of charging stations also reached a new peak in 2020.
