The number of stores specialized in ophthalmic optics used to rest on figures provided by the German Chamber of Trade (Handwerkskammer). However, as there was no unified system of registration, the reported figures did not match reality. Own inquiries of the German central association of opticians (ZVA) found 11,900 stores specialized in ophthalmic optics in Germany as of 31 December 2009. Based on this value, the number of employees had to be adjusted.

Figures for 2013 and older were taken from previous publications.
