Since 2006, the spending on inland transport infrastructure as a share of gross domestic product (GDP) steadily decreased in Italy. In fact, while 1.5 percent of the GDP was invested on transport infrastructure in 2006, the spending amounted to 0.4 percent of the gross domestic product in 2016.
The study considers all types of inland infrastructure: airports, maritime ports, inland waterways, road, and rail.
