New passenger car registrations 2007-2019

The Italian passenger car market remained flat between 2018 and 2019. The stagnation comes after the market declined between 2009 and 2013, but began to rebound in 2014. However, in 2018 the number of registrations decreased by about three percent on the previous year. Correspondingly, a similar trend could be seen with the number of passenger cars sold in Italy.

Italian passenger car sales in free fall

Italy's car market tanked amid the coronavirus outbreak in the country at the beginning of 2020. In April, Italy recorded only 4,279 new car registrations, down from almost 175,000 units in April 2019.

Leading car brands and models in 2019

The leading car models sold in Italy in 2018 from January to October, were Fiat Panda, Fiat 500X and Renault CLIO, with respectively 99.8 thousand, 43.8 thousand and 42.8 thousand units sold. In fact, Italy is the most important market for Fiat, with a sales value of 9.4 million US dollars in 2019.
