Over time, the development in the amount of payment cards given out in Portugal from 2000 to 2020 has fluctuated. The number of issued cards with a payment function amounted to approximately 21.9 million as of 2020. In Portugal, cash use is still relatively important, accounting for over a third of payments in 2019 (37 percent).
