Talking to the children about risks on the internet was the most frequent method of protecting them from online harassment in Sweden in 2019 with 28 percent of the respondents. Among other measures taken were monitoring child’s internet usage and limiting the time spent online. In contrast, the most common protection method in the European Union was monitoring children’s internet usage.
Cyber bullying
When asked if their kids had been bullied online, more than half of the parents in Sweden said their kids children had never been exposed to cyber bullying. Those Respondents whose children had been cyber bullied on a regular basis were three percent. Regarding parental awareness of cyber bullying worldwide, social networks were the virtual spaces pointed by most parents as a platforms for cyber bullying.
Social media platforms
Experiencing hate or threats on social media by Swedish teenagers peaked in 2017 and decreased slightly in 2018. However, throughout the period from 2016 to 2018, bullying on Instagram, which was the social media platformmost commonly associated with online hate, increased.
