Public expenditure in Sweden 2017, by function The central government expenditure in Sweden generally increased from 2007 to 2017, with peaks in 2009 and 2014. The highest expenditure was in 2017, reaching around 940 billion Swedish kronor. The largest sum of this expenditure was for social protection, which amounted to around 372 billion Swedish kronor.
Social protection in Sweden

     The expenditure for social protection in 2017 composed 40 percent of the total public expenditure during that year. Social protection includes elderly care, healthcare, functional limitation care and childcare and other important services for society. The largest share of the expenses for social protection was for elderly care where costs equaled a proportion of 1.7 percent of gross domestic product in 2017.  

Government income

   The government’s largest source of income in 2017 was direct and indirect tax on labor. Whereas the direct tax on labor generated an income of 635.6 billion Swedish kronor, the indirect tax on labor generated 558.8 billion Swedish kronor.
