Public expenditure in Sweden 2019, by function

The central government expenditure in Sweden generally increased from 2009 to 2019, with peaks in 2018 and 2019. The highest expenditure was in 2018, reaching around 992 billion Swedish kronor. The largest sum of this expenditure was for social protection, which amounted to around 342 billion Swedish kronor in 2019.

Social protection in Sweden

     The expenditure for social protection in 2017 composed 40 percent of the total public expenditure during that year. Social protection includes elderly care, healthcare, functional limitation care and childcare and other important services for society. The largest share of the expenses for social protection was for elderly care where costs equaled a proportion of 1.7 percent of gross domestic product in 2017.  

Government income

   The government’s largest source of income in 2019 was direct and indirect tax on labor. Whereas the direct tax on labor generated an income of 655 billion Swedish kronor, the indirect tax on labor generated 605 billion Swedish kronor.
