Social expenditure in Italy 2016-2019
Italy's expenditure on social protection amounted to 28.8 percent of the country's GDP in 2019. Between 2016 and 2019, the largest spending on social protection was registered in 2019. Social expenditure includes cash benefits, direct in-kind provision of goods and services, and tax breaks with social purposes, usually targeted at low-income households, the elderly, disabled, sick, unemployed, or young people.
