Italy's government expenditure on pensions accounted for 15.8 percent of the GDP in 2017. Between 2012 and 2017, the spending peaked at 16.2 for three years. Overall, social spending made up a large part of the general expenditure. The total social expenditure of Italy represents some of the highest among the OECD countries.
