Electricity generated in India 2015-2019 by type

The World Bank estimated that over a billion people in the world had no access to electricity. The south Asian country of India missed the opportunity to become a power surplus nation in 2019 by a narrow margin. The volume of electricity generated across India between April 2018 and January 2019 was one billion kilowatt hours. During this time period, the largest amount of electricity generation came from thermal power, at around 896 billion kilowatt hours. In 2019, the WPI of electricity stood at 115. This was an increase of over 15 percent from the base year of 2012.

India’s power consumption

Increased floor space covering, availability and affordability of air conditioners and electrification in rural areas created an increase in the power demand. Of the total power consumption in fiscal year 2018, the industrial sector accounted for the largest share, at about 48 percent, followed by the domestic and agricultural sectors at 24 and 18 percent respectively. The transmission losses in electricity across the south Asian country stood at a little over 21 percent that year.

Shortage and investments

Despite recent developments in energy production, a shortage of over 8,500 million units was recorded across India in financial year 2018, which was an increase from the previous year. The government recently made a big investment in the power sector to cope with the increasing demand. Nevertheless, shrinking households in urban areas are likely to put pressure on the municipal services to maintain adequate demand of water and power to these households and such ‘miscellaneous’ expenses will need to be addressed in the power generation targets.
