Number of residential dwellings ruined by natural disasters in Japan 2012-2021
In 2021, reportedly over 280 thousand residential buildings were ruined by natural disasters occurring in Japan. Figures peaked in 2011, when the number of destroyed buildings reached approximately 129.23 thousand. In that year, the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred. The damage caused by surging water from the tsunami that followed was more destructive than the earthquake, as it destroyed many Japanese cities.
