Italy: distribution of items collected on beaches 2018, by source This chart presents the distribution of items collected on Italian beaches in 2018, by anthropic activity considered as source of the waste. The mismanagement of urban waste seemed to produce over forty percent of the litter volume found on Italian beaches, while fishing and improper wastewater treatment were responsible for 14 percent and 7 percent of it, respectively. On 78 monitored beaches (over 416,000 square meters), volunteers found over 48,000 pieces of waste, with an average of 620 items of waste per 100 linear meters of beach.
