This chart presents the distribution of items collected on Italian beaches in 2019, by source. The mismanagement of urban waste was responsible for 85 percent of the litter volume found on Italian beaches. Moreover, improper wastewater treatment and fishing were responsible for eight percent and seven percent of the waste collected.
On 93 monitored beaches (396,750 square meters), volunteers found over 90 thousand pieces of waste, with an average of 968 items of waste per 100 linear meters of beach.
