In 2020, Rome was the province in the Italian region of Lazio recording the highest income of State museums, monuments, and archaeological areas. However, the revenue of such cultural institutions fell sharply over the previous year, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In 2019, the income of State museums and similar institutions in Rome added up to over 86 million euros, while it amounted to roughly 15.9 million euros in 2020.
