The fertility rate is the average number of children per woman. In France in 2018, women had an average of 1.88 children. This value was the lowest since 2005. Indeed, the fertility rate remained stable between 2005 and 2014. Since that year, the number of children per woman has been falling steadily. As a reminder, the generation renewal threshold is set at 2.05 children per woman. That is to say, as of 2018, France cannot hope to keep the same number of inhabitants only with natural growth.
