When it comes to summer holidays, Europeans, despite their differences, appear to have the same expectations. Studies have shown that the reasons for taking a vacation for the inhabitants of the Old Continent are most of the time the same: relaxing and visiting family. Thus, most Europeans had summer plans in 2018 whether it involved going abroad or staying in the country.
The French: European champions of summer holidays

According to the source French people had the longest average summer holiday duration in 2018. The French spent in average 2 weeks on summer vacation compared to 1 week for the Italians who were the Europeans with the shortest average summer holiday duration. Summer breaks seem to be important in Europe, a region were primary school students had between 13 and 6 weeks of summer school holidays in 2015. In about 9 weeks of summer school holidays, the French like to spend in average 1,993 euros. This number was just above the average budget for summer holidays travel in Europe which amounted to 1,957. In comparison the Italians, who had the highest number of summer school weeks and the shortest average summer holiday duration, spent 1,776 euros on summer vacation in 2018.

Europeans avoid travelling abroad

Several studies have pointed out that Europeans enjoy travelling in their own country or within Europe during summertime. In 2015, a survey from Eurostat showed that 93 percent and 89 percent of holidays trips in Spain and France were domestic. However, it also may be stated that Europeans like to discover the countries of their closest neighbors. In 2017, 15 percent of German tourists were considering going to Spain for the summer holidays , while 11 percent of Spaniards planned to spend their holidays in Italy.
